Officer Cadet Training Programme
Wightlink Limited is the premier ferry operator across the
Solent. We are on of the UK’s largest domestic ferry
companies, operating eight ro-ro car ferries and three
high-speed catamarans, on three routes, carrying over 1.3
million cars annually.
Wightlink offer opportunities for people to train for a career
at sea as a Deck or Engineer Officer Cadet.
This a three year course which combines both further and
higher education, consisting of alternating college and sea
phases leading to professional officer qualifications in
conjunction with Higher National Diplomas.
An alternative course introduced in September 2006 is the
Foundation Degree programme which is aimed at GCE A, GCE AS
and BTEC National level or equivalent.
On completion of a cadet training programme
and the award of an Officer of the Watch certificate of
competency, the junior officer is then qualified to be in
charge of a navigational bridge or engine room watch, as
appropriate, of any type of ship operating in any area of the
world.
Given the category of waters in which Wightlink ships operate
and the certification restrictions resultant from this, all of
our Cadets are seconded to shipping companies operating
worldwide to enable full unrestricted qualifications to be
achieved. Every cadet is sent to a nautical college in the
North of England with the intention of acclimatising the
student to being away from the home environment.
All college costs including tuition, examination fees and
boarding are met by Wightlink. Further costs generated by sea
phases including flights, transfers and boarding will also be
provided for. Each Cadet will receive a monthly allowance to
assist with other personally incurred costs.
The entry requirements for the HND Cadet scheme is a minimum
of 4 GCSE/SCE ‘S’ at Grade A to C/Level 1 to 3 respectively,
including Maths, Physics (or acceptable Science subject) and
English (or subject using English)
The minimum entry requirement for the Foundation Degree scheme
will be 120 points on the UCAS (University & College
Admissions Service) tariff system.
The total of 120 can be made up of any combination of A level,
AS level and BTEC National qualifications. However, applicants
will be required to hold GCSE mathematics (minimum grade B
Higher Tier Syllabus), English and a GCSE science with a
significant content of Physical Science.
All applications are considered on their merits irrespective
of the age of the candidate. However all candidates must be at
least sixteen years of age by the date they commence training.
Most new entrant cadets who apply are between the ages of
sixteen and twenty three, although applications from older
candidates are sometimes received. Cadet groups at college
will include candidates from across the entire age range and
the Company has a single training allowance irrespective of
age at commencement of training.
Candidates for other training programmes, offering previous
qualifications and experience such as shore based engineering
studies, relevant marine diplomas and degrees, engineering
apprenticeships, marine experience with the Services, and
similar, may cover a wide age range reflecting their previous
career experience.
Applications are welcome from bright, focused individuals
looking to embark on this exciting career path to:
