Located in a commanding position above Sandown Bay and the harbour of Bembridge, this unrestored Victorian fort is one of the many Palmerston Forts built during the Second French Empire to protect against the perceived threat of a French invasion by Napoleon III. However, as the threat never materialised, the fort was eventually repurposed for other uses.
During the First and Second World Wars it was occupied by all three armed forces, but afterwards this was not continued and it was left abandoned.
Bembridge Fort is owned by the National Trust and managed by the Bembridge Fort Trust, which is focused on preserving the building, celebrating its history, and creating a legacy for future generations. In partnership with other heritage organisations, the Trust aims to develop the fort as a major Island attraction and a venue for public events and community activities.
While the fort may be closed for up to 18 months for works (from Autumn 2024), organised groups can still arrange guided tours of accessible areas.
