Olympic athletics hero Nick Percy sails home to the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight’s Olympic star Nick Percy is back home after an amazing fortnight in Paris.

Although he narrowly failed to qualify for the final of the discus, the 29-year-old, who is sponsored by Wightlink, was impressive in one of the strongest line-ups the field event has ever seen.

While he threw 61.81 metres in qualifying, Nick was in the stronger of the two groups and missed out by a metre on the required distance. Jamaican athlete Roje Stona won gold with a throw of 70 metres in the final.

Nick, who receives supported ferry travel from Wightlink for his sporting endeavours, is not downhearted.

“It was an amazingly strong competition and I was really proud to be part of Team GB,” he says. “I am far from done though and am setting my sights on the 2028 and possibly the 2032 Games. I feel I have more to give. My personal best is not far off what achieved a medal this time.”

Nick travelled back to the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth on board Wightlink’s St Clare ferry.

“It was great to rub shoulders with athletes such as the women’s 400m Hurdles gold medallist and new world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and our own Olympic legend Tom Daley.”

He still has one more discus event this season, The Scottish National Championships.

Thanking Wightlink and other sponsors for their support, he says: “Without this backing, so many Isle of Wight sports people would not be able to travel to the events they need to get to,” said Nick.

Wightlink Commercial Director Phil Delaney adds: “Well done to Nick and the rest of Team GB. We are proud to have supported him over the years and now at the Olympics. Here’s to Los Angeles 2028.”
