Ryde Sea Cadets sail the Solent on the UK’s first hybrid energy ferry

Ryde Sea Cadets set sail on a larger boat than usual when they embarked with Wightlink to cross the Solent on its flagship Victoria of Wight.
The young seafarers were invited aboard for a round-trip as the Cadets are now sponsored by the ferry company.
Accompanied by Head of Fleet Operations Captain Sam Mitchell on an evening visit, the Cadets spent time on the Bridge and learned how mariners navigate in darkness using radar, charts and observation. They also looked round the Engine Control Room and discovered how Victoria of Wight’s hybrid systems combine energy from conventional engines with powerful batteries to reduce emissions by up to 20 per cent.
“It was a pleasure to welcome the Cadets onboard our flagship, especially as they had plenty of questions for us,” explains Sam. “I was delighted to hear many of them are considering maritime careers in the Royal or Merchant Navy and are also interested in sustainable marine technologies.”
Chief Petty Officer Linden Softley says: “It’s fantastic to be partnering with Wightlink this year, this has been a great opportunity for cadets to see navigation and engineering skills in context. What a treat to see a night-time entry into Portsmouth Harbour, the home of the Royal Navy, from the bridge of Victoria of Wight!” Ordinary Cadet Otis, who is now getting ready to go to University, told Sea Cadet leaders the visit gave him a great insight for considering future vocational opportunities.
Ryde Sea Cadets learn practical skills by taking to the water on sailing dinghies, kayaks and powerboats as well as life skills such as first aid, with the opportunity to gain valuable qualifications. It is a registered charity that relies on self-funding – with every penny received directly supporting the development of young people’s confidence. With Wightlink’s sponsorship, the Cadets are now looking forward to taking part in competitions, regattas and training on the mainland.
