An Isle of Wight cyclist has secured a place on a brand-new international racing circuit for electric mountain bikes.
Adam Holleyman, a Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team rider, will travel to Monaco in April to compete in the first leg of the World e-Bike Series.
Although he only started riding an electronic mountain bike recently, Adam is an experienced road and mountain bike rider and was selected to take part based on his solid track record in competitive cycling.
Adam says: “I am thrilled to have been invited to take part in this inaugural event. It is a great opportunity to test myself against some of the world’s best riders, while representing the Isle of Wight and having fun!
“Having only just started riding e-bikes, I am very impressed with their capabilities. The Isle of Wight is the perfect place to test them, with rugged coastal terrain and steep inland woodland trails. The extra power the bikes provide certainly make you push yourself and attempt climbs that you wouldn’t normally consider on a standard mountain bike.”
Dean Murphy, Head of Port Operations at Wightlink, says: “We have supported the Wightlink Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team for a number of years, assisting them with travel to events up and down the country. We are really pleased that Adam has secured a place in this circuit, I’m sure he will do the Isle of Wight and Wightlink proud as he competes around Europe. We wish him the best of luck.”
Kieran Page, WES Sporting Manager, says: “The Isle of Wight and the Wightlink Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team have a long history in cycle sport. Their involvement in this emerging discipline is testament to their passion for promoting of the Isle of Wight through cycling competitions. We wish Adam and the team all the best in this adventure, where his undoubted capacities shall make him a challenger in his chosen discipline of e-Bike Cross Country.”
The first round of the series will take place in Monte Carlo, Monaco on 13-14 April. It is followed by Ascona-Locarno, Switzerland (4-5 May), Lake Maggiore, Italy (12-15 September) and Barcelona, Spain (5-6 October).
